Sections and categories

So, you've recently installed Joomla, but what's next? Right now, you could begin with adding your content, but how do you start with it? For this tip, you'll need access to the Joomla back-end.

Of course it all depends on the amount and kind of information you want to show on your website. Let's assume you want to build a simple website which consists of a few simple static pages, and a separate news section.

For starters, you'll have to set up your site structure for your content, and divide it in sections and categories. For a simple website as mentioned above, you actually need one section, and 2 categories: 1 category for the static pages, and another one for the news articles.

  • Log in in the Joomla back-end
  • In the top menu, select Content -> Section Manager
  • In the top right corner, click the 'New' button. You'll see a page where you can enter the details for this section. It's sufficient to enter a title only. Let's use 'content' for example. Then hit the 'Save' button, and your section is saved.
  • In the top menu, select Content -> Category Manager
  • In the top right corner, click the 'New' button. It's actually the same action as for adding the sections. Enter a title for the category, 'static pages' for example, and click 'Save'. The category is now saved.
  • You can repeat the step above to enter another category for the news articles for example.

Now you can start with adding the content of your website. In the back-end, you can use the Article Manager for this. After adding your articles, you can link to each page separately with the Menu Manager.
